In
2000 a couple of boys aged 5 that went to school together, were
finding it hard to get settled into any local football teams.
One of the boys asked his Dad to start a team of his own and see
if any other boys of the same age would join from the area. That
Dad was Liam Quinn. Liam agreed to try and arranged for the two
boys to go to Eversley playing fields the following Saturday,
and spread the word to their friends that if they wanted , they
could come over and join in.
The first week four boys came to
the training session and seemed to enjoy the surroundings. Over
the coming months the number of boys training grew and grew and
when the winter came they moved to indoor training with numbers
exceeding 20 boys. In the Spring of the following year they had
enough boys to make teams and looked to join a local club .
Liam worked hard to link with Beech United.
They were entered as one team of
under 7,s and played exhibition matches and small tournaments.
After the presentation of that year he decided to try and go
separate ways from Beech and form his own club. However, Liam
knew that he would need help and would need to split the boys
into separate teams for different age groups. Liam turned to the
other original boy's dad, Jason Emery, who agreed to help.
In 2001 Signet United Youth was
formed and officially entered into the Essex F.A. Signet joined
the Thundermite League and most of their teams still play there
today. Signet have continued to grow year after year and each
year brings success and trophies.
In 2004 Liam stepped down from
Chairman for health reasons and Jason Emery was voted in as
Chairman of a twenty person committee, which represents
every team in the club and a separate parent coaches association
(P.C.A). However, Signet will always remember the
hard work contributed by Liam. Since they were formed Signet
United have won three League titles , adding several tournament
victories and two national competitions. They have also
taken part in two league cup finals. Signet continues to
progress and hopefully more silverware will come their way for
many years in the future.
